On Thursday February 1st heavy rain slammed into the California Coastline and unleashed roughly 3 to 4 inches of rain in a few hours in Palos Verdes. By 8:30am there was extreme flooding in parts of PV with one home getting flooded with inches of water inside the home. A clog occurred at the Lunada Canyon and came over the road to wash down Paseo Lunado. Lots of mud and debris was flowing down the street and some homes were damaged.
The exterior swale behind Berry Hill was clogged at the intersection of Palos Verdes Dr West and flooded the street with nearly 4 feet of water. Some cars were stuck in the high waters. Its very important that homeowners check their yard and exterior swale to keep them free of roots, tree’s, or debris. If left unattended they could flow down to the next drain and then clog causing erosion or worse. Another important measure is to control the water around the perimeter of the property.
Rain Gutters are a critical component to collect and displace the water to a drain and keep it away from the foundation of the home. Many homes have exposed dirt near the home which would allow for water to penetrate through the walls and into the home. Its a good idea to slope the dirt or replace with another material to keep water away from the house.
